Physical DescriptionA rectangular vertical silver plaque has a Liberian coat of arms at the top in the center. It features an image of a sailboat close to a shoreline. There are rows of horizontal black text below it.Historical NoteThe President of the Republic of Liberia, William R. Tolbert, Jr., gifted this plaque to the government and people of the United States in commemoration of the American Bicentennial. The plaque recognizes the role that the American Colonization Society played in establishing the colony of Liberia in 1822. In 1847, Liberia became an independent nation.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
