Physical DescriptionA dark red metal vase features a painted image of pink chrysanthemums with green leaves in front of a cluster of white anemones. The rim and base of the vessel are decorated with thin golden bands.
Historical NoteJapanese politician Kenzō Kōno presented this Cloisonné vase as a Head of State gift on November 20, 1974. Chrysanthemums are Japan’s national symbol and appear on the Imperial Seal of Japan. Cloisonné is an ancient enameling technique used to decorate metal objects. Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
