Historical NoteWinifred Wei, the wife of the Chinese ambassador to the United States, gifted this elephant to First Lady Betty Ford on November 11, 1975. They were attending a fair organized by the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). Held at the Sheraton Park Hotel in DC, this event featured many of the ambassadors’ wives with crafts and gifts from their countries.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
