Physical DescriptionA square black box with round corners features a painting of a red, blue, and green basilica against a sunset in the background.Historical NoteAndrei Gromyko, Foreign Minister of the USSR, gifted this lacquer box to President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. Palekh lacquer art originated in the 1920s in the Russian village of Palekh. The folk art involves hand-painting scenes on papier-mache objects like this box. The painting on the lid of the box may be inspired by St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
