Historical NoteIn May 1976 honorary president of the Tokyo Metropolitan Ikebana Artist Association Osanaga Kanroji sent this letter to First Lady Betty Ford to inform her that ikebana artists would be touring in honor of America's bicentennial. Ikebana is the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging. The name comes from the Japanese ikeru, meaning “to arrange” and bana meaning “flower.”Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during her husband's term in office. It was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in September 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
