Historical NoteLeonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, gifted this pin to President Gerald R. Ford. It commemorates Apollo-Soyuz, the first crewed international space mission. In July 1975, the U.S. Apollo spacecraft docked with the Soviet Soyuz capsule, providing a symbol of detente between the two Cold War superpowers.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
