Physical DescriptionPainted glazed tile displayed in dark wooden frame. Features blue image of a ship waving a flag as it approaches buildings in the distance. The years "1776" and "1976" are present in upper proper right and left corners respectively. Cursive blue writing is painted along the tile's bottom edge.Historical NoteA card accompanying the tile explains some of the production process. It reads, "Soon after 1600 according to a ceramic tradition, / hand-formed tiles were made in Makkum, of / Frisian clay, which were hand-painted and glazed / in a tin-glaze technique. / This work process has been followed in this work- / shop for more than three centuries. Every tile / has its own character due (thanks) to the / dedication and artistic ability of the painter."Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThe Gerald R.
