Physical DescriptionA male doll is dressed in a horse costume, which is made of red brocade fabric decorated with beads, faux pearls, and sequins. A white horse head is attached to the front of the costume, positioned in front of the man's torso.
Historical NotePolish leader Edward Gierek gifted this doll to President Gerald Ford during Ford’s state visit to Poland in July 1975. It depicts the Lajkonik, one of the unofficial symbols of the city of Krakow, Poland. During the Lajkonik Festival, the character is represented by a bearded man with a wooden hobby horse around his waist. The festival commemorates a Tartar invasion of Poland in the 13th century.Additional Details

Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
