Physical DescriptionA gold-plated medal depicts two six-pointed stars, one overlaid on the other. The overlaid star has white points with a golden outline. The star underneath it has diagonal raised lines on its points. In the center of the overlaid star, a green circle displays a golden silhouette of Vietnam and a red flame. The medal is suspended from a round metal loop with rounded corners that hangs from a vertically-striped green and white ribbon. A silver banner pin, which displays raised numbers, is attached to the top of the ribbon.Historical NoteDanny D. Elsea earned this U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and other materials for his service in the Vietnam War. He returned the materials to President Gerald R. Ford in an act of political protest following Ford's decision to grant clemency to draft evaders. Elsea attached a note to his medals reading “For What?” as well as documents corroborating his receipt of the materials.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in September, 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
