Physical DescriptionA golden ceramic plate features a symmetrical painted design made of multiple green, red, blue, and brown shapes.
Historical NoteEmperor Hirohito of Japan presented this ceramic Kutani plate to President Gerald R. Ford during his state visit to Japan in November 1974. Ford’s visit was the first time a sitting U.S. President had visited Japan. This type of porcelain originated in the Japanese village of Kutani in the 17th century. The porcelain ceased production at the end of the 17th century but was revived in the early 19th century. Kutani ware was officially designated as a traditional craft in 1975 and is now representative of the Japanese iroe, or “overglaze enamels,” style. This Kutani plate was made by noted ceramic artist Kizane Kamiide.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Gerald R. Ford during the Ford administration. It was presented to him and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
