Historical NoteYoshihiko Tsuchiya of Japan’s House of Councillors sent this porcelain doll to President Ford in 1975. Made by Japanese artist Seigetsu Ishi, the doll’s position echoes the first movements of the Sanbaso, a traditional kabuki theater dance. The doll wears an eboshi hat common among Shinto priests and carries suzo bells, which are associated with Shinto rituals. The doll’s brocade yakuta is patterned with cranes, which symbolize longevity and good luck.Additional Details
