Physical DescriptionA rectangular black box features a vertical design made up of orange and brown flowers with green leaves accompanied by light brown stalks of bamboo.Historical NoteJapanese Foreign Minister Toshio Kimura gifted this box to President Gerald R. Ford when he visited Japan. On November 18-22, 1974, President Ford became the first sitting U.S. President to visit Japan. This traditional “shikki” lacquerware box features floral decorations signifying different aspects of Japanese culture. The yellow chrysanthemum is used on the Imperial Seal of Japan, and it often references the head of state. It is also the representative flower of autumn. Zinnias are commonly interpreted as a symbol of loyalty. Bamboo, a prevalent subject in Japanese art, symbolizes strength and prosperity.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
