Historical NotePresident and Mrs. Ford traveled to Helsinki, Finland on July 29, 1975. While President Ford attended the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, which culminated in the Helsinki Accords, Betty Ford met with the public. Alongside other politicians’ wives, she toured Helsinki’s open-air market and ate lunch at the Kauppakilta restaurant. The restaurant’s manager, Aulis Harju, presented Mrs. Ford with this ceremonial key to its wine cellar.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford administration. It was presented to her and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
