Physical Description(a) A vertical gold and blue scroll features white Japanese characters outlined in black.
Historical NoteToshiharu Takano gifted this scroll to President Ford in July 1975. The poem on the scroll is by Sakuma Shōzan, a Japanese scholar and politician from the Edo period.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in September 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
