Physical DescriptionAn ivory photo album features a gold symmetrical diamond pattern on the cover. A large outline of a diamond is in the center. Two thin gold squares outline the edges.Historical NoteYoshihiko Tsuchiya of Japan’s House of Councillors sent a porcelain doll (1987.265.1 a) to President Ford in 1975. Made by Japanese artist Seigetsu Ishikawa, the doll’s position echoes the first movements of the Sanbaso, a traditional kabuki theater dance. The doll wears an eboshi hat common among Shinto priests and carries suzo bells, which are associated with Shinto rituals. The doll’s brocade yakuta is patterned with cranes, which symbolize longevity and good luck. This album contains photos and information about Ishikawa's process while making the doll.Additional Details
