Historical NoteEmperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako of Japan presented this painting to President Gerald R. Ford during their state visit on October 2, 1975. It was the first state visit to the United States by an Emperor and Empress of Japan. The painting was created by Kaii Higashiyama, a Japanese artist particularly known for his Nihonga-style paintings, which use mineral pigments on silk or paper.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Gerald R. Ford during the Ford administration. It was personally presented to him and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
