Historical NoteThis political cartoon, drawn by Paul Conrad of the Los Angeles Times in August 1975, comments on First Lady Betty Ford’s well-known candor. Conrad used a 1975 photograph taken of the family by Ford photographer David Hume Kennerly for Time Magazine as inspiration for his image. The cartoon comments on Betty Ford’s open discussion of controversial topics such as divorce and abortion. Although the image depicts President Ford covering his wife’s mouth, when the First Lady received criticism for her remarks during a 60 Minutes interview, the President supported his wife in a public statement. Conrad signed the cartoon, “For Mrs. Betty Ford and all the gang.” President Ford said on Conrad’s political cartoons, “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you’ve been the subject of a Paul Conrad cartoon.”Additional Details
