Physical DescriptionA gold-plated award features a helmet attached to a leather strap. It is supported on a pedestal with a round base, which displays horizontal rows of text across the front.
Historical NoteThis award was personally presented to President Gerald R. Ford by Thomas J. McDonough, National Commander of AMVETS, on October 19, 1975. It is the highest award for service to the country and it is only given to U.S. Presidents. Ford was the third recipient of the award. He displayed it prominently in his Oval Office throughout the rest of his administration.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Ford during his term in office. It was received by President Ford personally, until the President donated it to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum in 1981.
