Physical DescriptionA curved black sword has two thin engraved horizontal lines which enclose a pattern of diagonal lines on the upper part of the blade. The spherical wooden hilt is covered in gold leaf and features two human faces at the end.
Historical NoteGhanaian Ambassador Samuel Quarm gifted this ceremonial sword to President Gerald R. Ford. Known as an Akrafena, the sword originates from the Ashanti tribe of central Ghana. Akrafena swords were once used in warfare but are now used in ceremonies and symbolize courage, responsibility, and bravery. The swords often have symbols worked in into the blade.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was processed through the President’s White House Office of Correspondence, White House Gift Unit in 1975 and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
