David Mathews gifted this football to President Gerald R. Ford. It is signed by members of the 1974 University of Alabama football team, including Paul "Bear" Bryant and Ozzie Newsom. Mathews was Presdient of the University of Alabama from 1969 to 1975. He became the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare in the Ford Administration from 1975-1977.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was presented to Ford and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in September 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
