Physical DescriptionA white star displays a round blue center, which is decorated by tiny gold stars. A red hexagon is behind it. Five golden eagles with outstretched wings encircle both shapes. The medal hangs from the center of a navy-blue bow with silver edges.Historical NotePresident George H.W. Bush presented former First Lady Betty Ford with the Presidential Medal of Honor on November 18, 1991. Her citation reads, in part, “Her courage and candor have inspired millions of Americans to restore their health, protect their dignity, and shape full lives for themselves…” Betty Ford, when asked about her philanthropic activities, said, “When you have so much, it is just human nature that you see the needs of others and you want to help.”Additional Details
Custodial History NoteFirst Lady Betty Ford donated the item to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum in 1989.
