Physical DescriptionTwo wooden soldiers travel across rugged terrain while carrying a stretcher that supports a wounded person. A golden plaque affixed to the center of the rectangular base displays rows of horizontal black text.Historical NoteBuck Warren, an airplane mechanic at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, gifted this statue to President Ford in May 1975, in praise of Ford’s handing of the Mayaguez incident. In a newspaper interview, Warren explained the rationale behind the gift, stating, “The way President Ford handled the Mayaguez incident inspired respect of the American people. It was an act that took courage.” On June 28, 1976, the President sent Warren a thank you note, affirming “this result of your work is indeed appreciated, and I am truly grateful for the support that prompted you to favor me with such a meaningful gift.”Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in September 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
