Physical DescriptionA red horizontal band, which displays white text, decorates the front flap of a blue leather bag. Below it, there is white text outlined in red. Red and white leather cord, arranged in alternating v shapes, borders the flap's perimeter. A long red handle is fastened to the sides of the purse with white leather cord.
Historical Note“Arizona Joe” Manning of Phoenix, Arizona, sent this purse to First Lady Betty Ford in celebration of the American Bicentennial. The red, white, and blue purse features the phrases “The Spirt of 76” and “First Mama,” referring to Betty Ford’s Citizen’s Band (CB) radio handle. Arizona Joe was featured in The Arizona Republic showcasing the purse he made for Betty in celebration of the Bicentennial festivities. He also traveled to Philadelphia as an Arizona representative and dressed as Uncle Sam to attend the July 4, 1976 Bicentennial Program at Independence Hall.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1988 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
