Historical NoteMrs. Rafael Maximiano Vazquez, wife of the Argentine Ambassador, gifted this maté gourd cup and bombilla, or drinking straw, to First Lady Betty Ford on November 11, 1975. Both women were attending the 26th Annual International Fair in Washington, DC. The fair featured food and crafts from a variety of different countries. Maté is a traditional drink popular in many South American countries.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
