Physical DescriptionA six-panel beige folding screen features a rectangular embroidered image of ten red-crowned cranes against a blue background. There are five cranes in flight throughout: four in the background and one in the foreground. Two adult cranes are perched on a tree towards the proper left, and one is turned towards three baby cranes, which have open beaks. There are vertical red Korean characters on the proper right. A white border encloses the image.
Historical NoteDr. Il Kwon Chung, Speaker of the National Assembly of Republic of Korea, gifted this screen to President Gerald R. Ford on June 11, 1975. In Korean culture, red-crowned cranes are considered symbols of longevity, purity, and peace.Additional Details

Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
