Physical DescriptionA bible's metal cover features a decorative shape accented with red, white, and blue paint. A red crown decorated with small round pieces of turquoise is above it. A vertical rectangle encloses both motifs, and turquoise stones protrude from each corner. Raised Hebrew text and small raised images border the cover's edges.Historical NoteIn June 1976, Mrs. Ford traveled to New York City to attend the Jewish National Fund gala dinner. Shortly before he was to present the First Lady with a Bible on behalf of the JNF, Rabbi Maurice Sage collapsed on stage from a heart attack. While Secret Service officers attempted to save him, Mrs. Ford said a prayer. Unfortunately, Rabbi Sage passed away soon afterwards. Betty Ford kept the Bible until her death, displaying it in the Ford's home in Rancho Mirage, California.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was presented to her, and she donated it to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum in 2006.
