Historical NoteItalian President Giovanni Leone gifted this malachite box to First Lady Betty Ford on June 3, 1975, during the President and Mrs. Ford’s state visit to Rome. The trip, which was Betty Ford’s first trip abroad as First Lady, also included stops in Belgium, Spain, and Austria. The box was made by Italian jewelry designer and artisan Peppino Capuano.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was presented to her and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
