Physical DescriptionA blue flag features a pair of red bloomers that are embroidered with a white floral design. Curvy white text is above them, and three white letters are below them. White lace and patriotic trim border the flag's sides.Historical NoteSecret Service agents Dick Hartwig and Rick Sardo presented this Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) flag to First Lady Betty Ford after she mentioned that the First Lady, like the President, should have a flag to fly on her car. While never used on her car, Betty Ford proudly displayed this flag on her desk. Congress first introduced the ERA, a constitutional amendment to guarantee legal gender equality for women and men, in 1923. The ERA did not achieve ratification.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe general public gifted the item to First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. President Ford donated it to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum in September 1981.
