Physical DescriptionA dark purple evening gown features an ornate v-shaped gold appliqué at the neckline and several matching appliqués along the hem that extend upward towards the knee. Gold flowers decorate the scallop-edged cap sleeves, and gold vines with leaves are positioned vertically beneath each of them.Historical NoteAlgerian president Houari Boumediene gifted this dress to Second Lady Betty Ford on April 12, 1974, along with matching slippers (1988.977 b-c). The traditional Algerian dress is known as a djebba fergani, a style which originated in the country’s Constantine Province. Djebba fergani are known for elaborate embroidery and are often reserved for special occasions and ceremonies, especially weddings. While many feature velvet, lace, or beaded sleeves, the version presented to Mrs. Ford is sleeveless, and instead has a long, slit-like armhole with an added strip of fabric just above the shoulder.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to Second Lady Betty Ford during the Nixon administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
