Physical DescriptionA rectangular music box is made of black wood and brown marble. A rectangular gold plaque with horizontal rows of text is affixed to the center of the front edge. The interior of the lid is lined with black fabric, and the metal mechanisms below it are visible through a horizontal glass pane.Historical NotePresident Gerald R. Ford received this wooden music box as a Bicentennial gift from Reuge Saint Croix Co., the largest music box company in Switzerland, through the Swiss embassy in 1976. As the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford received the 38th out of 100 editions made. The box plays “Chimes of Liberty.”Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to Gerald R. Ford during his term in office. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
