Historical NoteEgyptian President Anwar Sadat gifted these objects to President and Mrs. Ford during their visit to Austria in June 1975. The two leaders met in Austria to discuss Middle East politics and disengagement between Egypt and Israel. The Sinai Interim Agreement, or Sinai II, was signed three months after this meeting. It led to the eastern withdrawal of Israeli forces in the Sinai, the creation of a U.N. buffer zone in their place, and the implementation of multiple U.S. stations in the Sinai Peninsula.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteA foreign official gifted the item to President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford during the Ford Administration. It was presented to themn and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
