Historical NoteHelge Jaasalo, Director General of the Finnish Board of Navigation, gifted this medal to President Ford while on a tour of the Finnish icebreaker ship, Urho. Named after President of Finland Urho Kekkonen, this ship, the largest and most powerful icebreaker of its time, allowed Finnish ports to stay open year-round. President Ford was in Finland for the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, where he signed the Helsinki Accords.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Gerald R. Ford during the Ford administration. It was personally presented to him and was maintained at the Executive Office of the President until its transfer to the National Archives in 1981 for deposit with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
