Highlights from Bicentennial Collection
In 1976, Americans commemorated the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. President Ford joined Americans across the county celebrating with parades, ceremonies, picnics, and other festivities. The President also hosted two official state visits. President and Mrs. Giscard d’Estaing of France visited the United States in May 1976 and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Great Britain toured across the country in July 1976. As part of the Bicentennial celebrations, both foreign heads of state and everyday Americans gifted objects to President Ford, which ranged from handmade items to precious materials. President Ford accepted these objects on behalf of the American people. To view more Bicentennial artifacts, explore the Bicentennial Materials in the Digital Artifact Collection.
